Hey did you know? May 27th is international sunscreen day. Sunscreen is very often underestimated or overlooked completely. We'll try to break down a couple of the most common misconceptions about it so you can have safe fun in the sun.
First of all, everyone should protect themselves from the sun even if it is cloudy. With the heatwave for this bank holiday weekend we are also promised rain and thunderstorms by the forecasts but don't let that fool you. Anytime your body is exposed to natural light you are exposed to harmful UV radiation from the sun some of which even penetrates through glass, such as your home or car windows.
Many believe that people with darker skin have a natural protection from the sun. While it is true that the melanin in your skin gives you some protection from UVB rays, which cause sunburn, you are still not protected from UVA rays which are responsible for skin damage that accelerates its aging and skin cancer development.
